Definition
General term for small circumscribed macules with increased melanin but no increase in number of melanocytes.
Aetiology & Pathogenesis
Brown macule on skin or mucosa.
Signs & Symptoms
Brown macule.
Localisation
Most often hands, face, occasionally mucosa.
Classification
Mucosal lentigo, ephelides (freckles), sunburn freckles, PUVA freckles, genital lentigo, senile lentigo, solar lentigo.
Diagnosis
Clinical findings; skin biopsy not usually needed.
Differential Diagnosis
Melanocytic naevus, Lentigo maligna and other pigmented skin lesions.
Prevention & Therapy
None required.
